Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Disaster (東日本大震災)

As most of you know, an earthquake of magnitude 9.0 (initially reported as 8.8 but later revised to 9.0) and an ensuing tsunami occurred on Friday, March 11th in Eastern Japan, followed by significant aftershocks. As a result, there were explosions at some of the nuclear reactors, exposing some in the area to radiation.

Thankfully, there weren’t any earthquakes here in Okinawa, but tsunami warnings were in effect until the evening of Saturday, March 12th. We are on an island about 1,100 miles (1,818 km) away from the epicenter. Thanks to all those who were praying for us and sending us messages.

皆さんもご存知の通り、2011年3月11日、三陸沖を震源に東日本大震災が発生しました。国内観測史上最大のマグニチュード9.0を記録し、それに伴って発生した津波と火災では多くの被災者が出てしまいました。また、現在、東京電力福島原発爆発などの発生で避難指示も発令されています。それに伴い、私たちの安否を心配する海外に住む家族・友人たちに向けて特別版のニュースレターを送信しました。海外向けのニュースレターであったため、日本語版のニュースレターはあえて用意しませんでしたが、私たちの住む沖縄は津波警報が出ましたが、特に大きな被害はなかったと聞いています。
