Bible College Banquet (バイブルカレッジ謝恩会)

On Monday Nov 30th, we both attended the Bible College banquet (though Yumi had to go back to work in the middle of it), held at the Macaroni Grill on Camp Foster. There was lots of Italian food and good times. The bread was great! We both sat the teacher's table and asked Joanna about the highlights of the last 3-4 years of the Bible College. It is exciting to think what the Lord has in store for the students.

"Katakana" Paradise!

We have been meaning to post this entry since this summer. Sorry that we could not do it sooner. Those of you who are either Okinwans or have visited Okinawa probably noticed that Okinawa is the "Katakana paradise." (Katakana is one of three Japanese alphabets. It is usually reserved for foreign words. Kanji is another alphabet that consists of complicated characters that came from China.) There are Katakana road signs and billboards. This past summer Yumi noticed that even the billboards for political candidates use Katakana for their names! (even though people usually use Kanji for their names). I guess the reason for that is perhaps with Katakana, it is easier to read (no need of knowing how to read Kanjis) and gives more impact. And Yumi's guess is that one of the candidates, "Denny Tamaki" who is half Japanese, uses Katakana for his name, others decide to compete with Denny by also using Katakana.

Women's Craft Fellowship (女性のクラフト・フェローシップ)

Two Mondays ago we had women's Craft fellowship at the church. Stacy showed us how to make Christmas cards and New Year's cards (like these ones). Although many of us are not big on craft, this time we got really into it and had a great time! Thank you, Stacy for showing us how to do this!

Chuck Teaching Pre-school Kids (幼稚園で英語を教えてます)

As some of you know, Chuck has been teaching English to pre-shoolers once a week. One day this summer, Yumi made a trip with Chuck. The kids at the school are really cute. Most of them behave pretty well. But there are a few who really aren't into the whole English thing. As Chuck have come to find out, playing games seems to work the best -- those kids have a lot of energy. Overall, it is a blast to run around with the kids. Currently, the kids and Chuck are preparing for the upcoming presentation in January.

What We don't Have on Mainland Japan -- Dessert

Blue Seal Ice Cream was supposedly "born in America and raised in Okinawa." Whatever that means. But Blue Seal is good though. It is kind of like Baskin Robbins in main land Japan.

Okinawa Christian University Won!!

As we reported earlier, our friend, Miki was part of a team from Okinawa Christian University that participated in a Family Mart internship. Each team developed a product, marketing campaign, and filmed a commercial. Miki's team competed with 5 other Okinawa universities to see which team's product would sell the most at Family Mart. The results are in and Miki's team won the competition! Here are a picture of a local paper of their accomplishment and a picture of Miki and Yumi at church. Congratulations, Miki.

Miki's "Sweets" at Family Mart

TV commercial that went on air in Okinawa

One Saturday we were at a doctor's office, waiting for our turn. As we were watching TV, all the sudden we saw our friend, Miki on a TV show!! The show featured a college competition that Okinawa Family Mart sponsors every year. Students from 6 Okinawan universities participate in an internship and come up with a product to be sold at Family Marts. This includes market research, advertising, and negotiations with Family Mart headquarters. Miki was a part of Okinawa Christian University team and was on the commercial, too. Since Miki has told Yumi that she was working on this project a while ago, it was actually neat to see it to finished and see her on TV. So to celebrate, Yumi went to a nearby Family Mart and bought one (as seen above). It was delicious and I would say, "Good job, Miki!!" :-) By the way, Miki is the girl in the middle, wearing a red kimono in the commercial.

The Armago Head back to CA

We will miss you, Ira and Iruma!
and of course Izaki!
Our last shot with Ira and Iruma until we meet again (!!)
Three Amargo family (Ira, Iruma, Izak) went back to California. Ira was stationed for about a year at one of the bases while his daughters Iza and Ina attended the Bible College. Sadly, their time was up and now they are enjoying sunny Southern California. It was a joy to have them around and we miss them.

Youth Cafe (ユースカフェ)

A while back the youth of the church put on an event on Friday night called "Youth Cafe." The espresso machine was dusted off and fired up, and the high schoolers served us coffee as well as some snacks. They also had several performances. The youth group band played a tribute to the youth leader, Tom Cotton, in a song appropriately titled "Tom Cotton." Emi Tajika played a song on the keyboard along with John Michael. Also, we were entertained with several homemade music videos produced by Hannah Ruiz. They were really good. It was a fun night.

Tsukamoto Family Came Also!

We were also blessed with a visit by the Tsukamoto family. They are old friends of Yumi's (Satoko is a friend from high school) and live in Zushi (mainland Japan), which is the city that Chuck used to live in. Shion-Chan and An-Chan had a good time at Sunday School. Everyone was surprised at how much Shion knew about the Bible. Here are some photos of us at Ukaji Soba, an Okinawan restaurant.

Taro and Kumiko Came from Mainland

Our friends, Taro and Kumiko Sakaki from mainland paid us a visit in September. We feasted on some delicious gyoza (dumpling) at our apartment and then went to Wednesday night service at CC Ginowan. Kumiko and Taro then spent a few days in Nago (northern Okinawa) but we were able to spend a little time with them and some new friends from CC Naha (Danny and Ayano). It was good to catch up with and see how things are going in mainland Japan. But it was not long enough! Please come back again, Taro and Kumiko!

Fall Women's Breakfast (秋の女性の朝食会)

Pancakes were delicious!  Thank you guys for serving us.

Back in September, we hosted the Fall Women's Breakfast at the church. Many women came and enjoyed delicious pancakes and other yummy stuff that were prepared by the men of the church. They served us and took care of us while we enjoyed ourselves at the breakfast. Reiko-san shared her testimony of how she became a Christian. It was very powerful, and we were very moved by how the Lord met her and guided her life so far. We are blessed to have our wonderful sister in Christ.

We are sorry that we have not updated the blog for so long. We hope that these sad looking pets convey how sorry we feel. We'll try to be a little more regular in our posts.
