Driving the East Coast Okinawa

Yumi had off from work on Memorial Day, so we went for a drive up the east coast of the island and toured Higashi Village.  Most of the good stuff is on the west coast, but since we'd never been to the NE of Okinawa it was worth a visit.  Well, it is very rural and pretty.  I (Chuck) liked all the hills, but Yumi prefers the beaches.  There aren't many resorts like there are on the west coast, but there are a few very beautiful scenic places to see the Pacific Ocean.  Sadly, we didn't see any churches around.  Check out the pictures of this beautiful island.

Aftermath of Typhoon Songda

The first big typhoon of the season came and passed in about 4 or 5 hours.  It was quick, but it left some damage.  There wasn't any damage to our apartment, but the church's cafe sign was torn off and crumpled like a coke can.  The big empty space on the building (3rd picture) used to have the sign there.  Everyone was out in their yards cleaning up the storm debris on Sunday morning as we were going to church.

Super Typhoon Songda (猛烈な台風2号が接近中)

As you can see from the pictures above, there is a super typhoon heading our way!  It is scheduled to pass right by Okinawa Sat. night, so we are preparing for some heavy winds and rain.  Typhoons are a common thing here in Okinawa, and most people prepare well, but there is always a chance of heavy damage. Please pray that everyone will be safe.

Note on name of the typhoon: At the beginning of the season a list of names is generated for all the typhoons of the season.  The names are from a variety of Asian countries.  These names are used by the English language weather officials (i.e. those on base), but the Japanese weather authorities only give the typhoons numbers.  Interesting.

Reflection of the Hokkaido Outreach

What a great trip!  The idea for the trip started when Yumi and I were driving around Furano when we visited Hokkaido last Fall.  It's funny how you often need to get away from the usual routine of life for God to give you vision.

I think we can all testify of how much God provided for the trip: time, opportunities, unity, a spirit to work, money for plane tickets, and plenty of food.  God provides.  But we also got to see God at work in a guy's life as he came to put his faith in Christ.  What a day that was!  I'm sure we were able to plant many more seeds in the hearts of the children of Yuni, the university students, and the people in Odori Park on Monday April 25th.  How great is God that he lets us partner in the work that He is doing!

Debriefing of Hokkaido Outreach

We had the Hokkaido crew over to our apartment for teppanyaki dinner and talked about the trip and then prayed for our friends the Lorinczes and Trevor and for Sapporo and Yuni.  Yumi hooked up the video of our performance of our gospel pantomime skit. Everyone had a good laugh at themselves.  What a great crew.

CCBC Okinawa Graduation (CCBC

Yumi, Jon, Anna, Joshu, & Chuck - L to R
This semester, two Americans and one German graduated from the Bible College!  We were privileged with the opportunity to see Josh Brevick and Anna Hebel spend all two years here.  I remember when both of them first came to the college.  The other student was Jonathan Piper, who spent his other semesters in Murrieta and Israel.  All three graduates had a short exhortation from the Word and spoke about what God taught them in the last two years.  Thanks to God for allowing us to be a part of their lives and teach them.

Group Picture (グループ写真)
This year's worship conference was a bit different from past conferences in that the conference was held in several different locations (see flyer above).  The theme was "Worship in Hard Times" -- which was chosen well before the March 11 earthquake and tsunami that ravaged mainland Japan.  Also, we had speakers from a wide geographic area: Tokyo, Nagano, and New Zealand.  Mark Walsh, who is the director of Calvary Chapel Bible Institute in New Zealand, taught from Revelation 4, and Yumi translated.  There were also a variety of worship teams from different churches.  It made us think a lot about how important worship is (especially in hardtimes) and how important it is to the church.  There was also a panel discussion with the pastors that gave some good insight about ministry.

Pastor Mark Walsh from New Zealand (マーク・ウォルシュ牧師 from ニュージーランド)

At last, Mark Walsh from New Zealand is here.  Mark ran the internship program while Yumi was interning at the Bible College in Hungary.  He and his family have since moved to New Zealand and started Calvary Chapel Bible Institute New Zealand.  I (Chuck) went to pick him up at 10:20 in the morning but I realized I was 12 hours early -- that's why they wrote P.M. on the ticket.  Oops.  My bad.  So we got to go as a couple and pick him up.  It took him a long time to get here but he looked good.
