Street Witnessing (路傍伝道)

On Wednesday afternoon, Keisho, two of the American missionaries, Dave Redondo and Joe Tipton, and I went to Mihama Beach to share the Gospel and pass out tracts.  Please pray that those that we reached would be be moved by the love of Christ and the forgiveness that He offers.

Dave Redondo is a new missionary here and has a real heart for evangelism.  Please pray for him as he gets a place to live and situated to living and serving in a new country.

Settling in (引っ越し&買い物)

The Ruiz's are in Tokyo for the Calvary Chapel Japan Conference, and the graciously allowed us to use their cars to go shopping for furniture and appliances at department stores and recycle shops.  We hit up Nitori (Japan's answer to Ikea) and Yamada Denki, an electronics store, and found some good deals, including a handsome chocolate brown bean bag chair.  Also, we signed up for Yahoo BB internet service, and it will be installed within a few weeks in our apartment.  Here is a picture of Chuck installing a chair, some stuff from Nitori.

Search for a Car (車探し)

One of our new friends from church, Keisho, took us out shopping for a used car on his day off from work. It was great that we got an entire afternoon to hang out with him. We did some research at the Koinonia Cafe and then headed out to look at a few cars. Some of the used cars here were used on the mainland and then shipped down here. We found one we really like in Okinawa City, and we are praying about whether or not it is the right car for us. It is a Suzuki WagonR, which is very popular here.

First Weekend in Okinawa

Dan Pallmann taught from John 11 in Japanese, and Andrew Neely translated it into Japanese
)
Look what we found at a "recycle shop"
Hannah Ruiz's Sweet Sixteen Party
Rie's baptism at the Tropical Beach

This weekend was busy!  Friday night we went to Ishikawa City for a Bible study with a few of the Bible College students and missionaries.  It was held at the home of Dan and Debe Pallmann, who are missionaries here and hope to plant a church.  Dan taught from John 11 in Japanese, and Andrew Neely translated it into English.  Please keep them and this study in prayer as they step out in faith to reach the people of Ishikawa.

On Saturday we scoured the recycle shops of southern Okinawa looking for appliances, furniture, and anything that might make our empty apartment look like home.  We found a great rice cooker, dresser, and dining room table and chairs.  Now we have a place to sit and eat rice :-)  Later in the evening we gathered at the Koinonia Cafe to celebrate Hannah Ruiz's Sweet Sixteen.  Hannah is the oldest daughter of Pastor Tom Ruiz. Lots of people.  Really good cake.  Tons of fun.  And we finished off the night with swing dancing and the electric slide.  Many of the ladies dressed in yukata (summer kimono) and the men in jinbe (men's summer kimono).

After Sunday morning service, we had a leadership meeting at the church and discussed upcoming events, outreaches, and conferences for the next 1-2 months.  We're going to show the Passion of the Christ at church on Good Friday as an evangelistic outreach, so please keep this in prayer .  In the afternoon, we headed to nearby Tropical Beach Rie-San's baptism.  She will soon be moving to Miyako Island, which is one of the other islands in the Ryukyu island chain.  Pray that she could find a good church and continue to grow.  We finished off the evening with "W2" (worship and word) at the church.  Dan Pallmann had a great message from Obadiah.

We've Got an Apartment

The real estate agency offered us tenpura while we were signing the lease
The name of real estate company was "a i u e o"
The name of real estate company was "a i u e o"
The Lord has provided us a place to live! It turns out that everything worked out with the second apartment that we looked at, and the realtors agreed to rent a 2LDK apartment. LDK=Living room plus Dining room plus Kitchen.  We drove to Naha, the capital of Okinawa, to the rental agency to sign the lease and stopped at a convenience store and picked up some Okinawan snacks: sampin cha (Okinawan jasmine tea) and Spam onigiri (Spam, seaweed, and rice snack food).  The name of real estate company was "a i u e o," which means "ABCDE" in the Japanese alphabet. Clever name, huh? ;-)  Anyway, everything worked out smoothly with the rental process.  For some reason, the staff at the real estate agency offered us tenpura (fried vegetables and squid) while we were signing the lease.  Although this seemed really strange we took them up on their offer.  When everything was finished, we grabbed the entire bag of tenpura and took off.  In retrospect, we realize they were only offering a few tenpura, not the entire bag. Oops.  Later we checked with our Okinawan friends to see if this was normal to receive tenpura, but everyone thought that it was really unusual and funny.  We received the key and have already started dropping off some of the furnishings that we bought.

Wednesday Night Service at Calvary Chapel Ginowan

 At Koinonia Cafe

With Pastor Tom
Wednesday night was our first church service here at CC Ginowan. Mid-week services are held in the Koinonia Cafe instead of the main sanctuary.  Pastor Tom had a good message from Numbers 12, and we got a chance to meet many of the people from the church and fellowship with them.   Here is a picture from the service and a picture of me (Chuck) and Pastor Tom.  Please pray that God would continue to use this church in the lives of people who come to the Wednesday night service.

Apartment Search (アパート探し)

With Pastor Tom and Andrew Neely's help, we set off looking for apartments in Ginowan City, near the church. We checked out a few, but they were a little old and not too attractive. The second apartment we looked at was very nice. It is only 4 years old and was not listed on the market. It is only 10 minutes away from the church. This may be the one. There is some paperwork that has to be taken care of, but we'll keep you posted. We're praying that we can make it a comfortable place to host neighbors and friends from the church body.

Arrival at Okinawa (沖縄に到着)

At last we arrived at Okinawa!  Our flight on All Nippon Airways was easy, and there was tons of open seats.  We flew on an airplane with a Pokemon theme :-)  Pastor Tom Ruiz's wife, Joanna, picked us up from Naha airport and gave us a lift to the Ruiz's house.  There was also a woman dressed in a ladybug costume at the airport.  Tom had an evening class at the Bible College, but we linked up later and filled him in on all the wedding stories and what we've been up to.

Last Night in Fujisawa

We were blessed to have Taro and Kumiko Sakaki and Satoko Tsukamoto come over to Yumi's parents' house for our last night in Fujisawa. We had a blast watching the wedding video with Yumi's parents and eating some delicious cake that they brought. We finished the evening by praying for each other. We miss them already...

CC Kamakura Going Away Party (カルバリーチャペル鎌倉 - 送別会)

Sunday the 8th was our last Sunday at Calvary Chapel Kamakura in the Japanese mainland. Pastor Jack had both of us come forward and prayed for us. Afterwards we gathered upstairs for a potluck and had a great time of fellowship. We were also given a handmade card signed by the church body and were blessed with another card specially made by the kids. We'll definitely miss all of our friends at Kamakura.

Iruma Bible Study (入間バイブルスタディー)

On Friday night, we traveled to Iruma, a suburb of Tokyo, for a Bible study with the Bolinger family. We had a great time studying through part of 1 John and met some people from CC Tokorozawa. Please pray for the Bolinger family as they minister to their neighbors and people of Iruma. Please also pray for Dan -- he recently was in a bicycle accident and still has some ringing in his ears. Take it easy on those hills, Dan :-)

CC Kamakura Wednesday Night Prayer Meeting (カルバリーチャペル鎌倉 - 祈祷会)

Tonight was our last Wednesday night prayer meeting before heading down to Okinawa. It was good to see Emiko and Yoshiki come out. We have had some good times around that table praying. Please keep CC Kamakura in your prayers as God continues to use the church in the community.

Prayer Request (祈りのリクエスト)

One of the things we need before we head to Okinawa is our Japanese name stamp, or hanko. It is used in lieu of a signature and is custom-made. We've already ordered ours, but could you please pray that it would arrive in the mail soon, because we need to have it to take care of some necessary admin before we fly to Okinawa on Tuesday, March 10th.

Our Wedding (私たちの結婚式)

Our wedding was a blast and God blessed us in ways that we couldn't even imagine. Thank you for all those who prayed for the big day.  Here is a picture from our wedding. The official photos from the photographer have not arrived, but we've been receiving photos from friends and family. We'll post more as they arrive.
