What We don't Have on Mainland Japan -- Food #2 (本土にない物 - 食べ物編 No. 2)

Yakiimo (焼いも)： Recently, Yumi heard a man in our neighborhood announcing over a loud speaker that was selling something out of the back of his van. It was yakiimo! Yumi wondered why this guy is selling yakiimo in the summer. In mainland Japan, yakiimo is a seasonal food that is only sold in the winter. It is a hot sweet potato that makes you warm in a cold day. Later on, Yumi asked a local Okinawan about this and got a response that "Oh, don't you guys eat it in the summer time on the mainland Japan?" I guess for Okinawans, eating yakiimo is like eating ice cream in the winter.

Yumi also asked an Okinawan about whether or not they had ever heard about eating mandarin oranges (mikan) while sitting under the kotatsu (a fireplace with a coverlet) in the winter time. This is a wintertime thing for mainlanders. The response was, "Oh, I saw that in a picture book when I was a child!" I guess the answer is "no" and there is no need for a kotatsu here :-)

こちらに来てから、日中、近所をまわって何かを売っているトラックが走っているので、よく耳を澄まして聞いてみると、それは何と「焼いも」屋さんでした！本土では焼いもは冬に食べるものとされているので、この暑い時期に食べるのかと耳を疑ってしましました。やはり私たちのアパートから外を見てみると、本土で冬見かける「焼いも屋さん」のトラックが走っていました。後で、沖縄の人にこのことを聞いてみると、「あら、本土では焼いも夏食べないの？」との答え。(--) きっと、沖縄では冬にアイスクリームを食べるような感覚なのでしょう。

話のついでに冬にコタツに入りながらミカンを食べることを聞いてみたら、「あっ、それ、子供の時に絵本で見たことある！」との答えでした。同じ国でもこれだけ違うのに驚く毎日です。
