Okinawa's Future? (沖縄の将来は?)
It has been decided! After weeks of listening to campaign trucks with loudspeakers, the election is finally over. The incumbent governor of Okinawa, Hirokazu Nakaima, was victorious. The new mayor of Ginowan is Asato.

"Katakana" Paradise! (カタカナ天国、沖縄!)
We have been meaning to post this entry since this summer. Sorry that we could not do it sooner. Those of you who are either Okinwans or have visited Okinawa probably noticed that Okinawa is the "Katakana paradise." (Katakana is one of three Japanese alphabets. It is usually reserved for foreign words. Kanji is another alphabet that consists of complicated characters that came from China.) There are Katakana road signs and billboards. This past summer Yumi noticed that even the billboards for political candidates use Katakana for their names! (even though people usually use Kanji for their names). I guess the reason for that is perhaps with Katakana, it is easier to read (no need of knowing how to read Kanjis) and gives more impact. And Yumi's guess is that one of the candidates, "Denny Tamaki" who is half Japanese, uses Katakana for his name, others decide to compete with Denny by also using Katakana.

What We don't Have on Mainland Japan -- Dessert (本土にない物 - デザート編)
Blue Seal Ice Cream was supposedly "born in America and raised in Okinawa." Whatever that means. But Blue Seal is good though. It is kind of like Baskin Robbins in main land Japan.
ブルーシールアイスクリームは何でも「アメリカ生まれの沖縄育ち!」だそうです。本土にあるバスキン・ロビン(31)のようなものですね。でもブルーシールは美味しい!

What We don't Have on Mainland Japan -- Food #2 (本土にない物 - 食べ物編 No. 2)
Yakiimo (焼いも): Recently, Yumi heard a man in our neighborhood announcing over a loud speaker that was selling something out of the back of his van. It was yakiimo! Yumi wondered why this guy is selling yakiimo in the summer. In mainland Japan, yakiimo is a seasonal food that is only sold in the winter. It is a hot sweet potato that makes you warm in a cold day. Later on, Yumi asked a local Okinawan about this and got a response that "Oh, don't you guys eat it in the summer time on the mainland Japan?" I guess for Okinawans, eating yakiimo is like eating ice cream in the winter.
Yumi also asked an Okinawan about whether or not they had ever heard about eating mandarin oranges (mikan) while sitting under the kotatsu (a fireplace with a coverlet) in the winter time. This is a wintertime thing for mainlanders. The response was, "Oh, I saw that in a picture book when I was a child!" I guess the answer is "no" and there is no need for a kotatsu here :-)

What We don't Have on Mainland Japan -- Food (本土にない物 -- 食べ物編)
We would like to start a series called "What we don't have on mainland Japan." As you know, Okinawa was under the United States' control until 1972. So before then, any Okinawan who wished to travel to main land Japan had to have a passport! After it was returned to Japan, Okinawa adopted many of the Japanese customs but also kept the Ryukyu and American culture.
The first one is on "Food."
「本土にない物 」と題してシリーズを始めたいと思います。ご存知の通り、沖縄は1972年までアメリカの支配下にあったので(私は知らなかったのですが)、返還前までは日本本土に行くためにはパスポートが必要だったそうです。返還後には日本の文化も取り入れつつも、こちらの琉球文化とアメリカの文化を保っているので独特な文化になっているようです。
第一回目は「 食べ物」編です。
Sanpincha (さんぴん茶):
This delicious Jasmine tea goes well with tatami mats on breezy Okinawan afternoons. You would see this everywhere on the island, but sadly it is no where to be found on mainland Japan.
さんぴん茶は沖縄独特のジャスミンティーで、どこのお店や自販機でも必ず売っています。本土でさんぴん茶が買えないのが残念です。
Spam onigiri (スパムおにぎり):
Seaweed, rice, egg, and Spam sandwich. They are available at convenience stores and some grocery stores. It is definitely not the source of Okinawan longevity, but they are delicious.
海苔、ごはん、卵とスパムのポークで出来ている「スパムおにぎり」。本土にはありませんが、こちらのコンビニやスーパーで他のおにぎりに並んで売られています。これを食べることが沖縄の人たちが長生きする秘訣ではないのでしょうが、これが中々美味しい!是非、沖縄へ来た際は食べてみて下さい。

We've Got an Apartment (アパート決まりました)
The real estate agency offered us tenpura while we were signing the lease (契約時に天ぷらが出てきました)
The name of real estate company was "a i u e o" (不動産屋の名前は"あいうえお")
The name of real estate company was "a i u e o" (不動産屋の名前は"あいうえお")

Arrival at Okinawa (沖縄に到着)
沖縄に着きました!フライトは全く問題なく、写真にあるポケモンの飛行機で沖縄に到着しました(^^) トム・ルイズ牧師の奥さまのジョアナさんが那覇空港まで迎えに来て下さったのですが、ジョアナさんを待っている間に、何と(!)てんとう虫の格好をした女性の登場!(でも、なんで。。。)トム牧師の夜のバイブルクラスの後、トム牧師のお宅で結婚式の話や近況報告で盛り上がりました。
