"Katakana" Paradise! (カタカナ天国、沖縄！)

We have been meaning to post this entry since this summer. Sorry that we could not do it sooner. Those of you who are either Okinwans or have visited Okinawa probably noticed that Okinawa is the "Katakana paradise." (Katakana is one of three Japanese alphabets. It is usually reserved for foreign words. Kanji is another alphabet that consists of complicated characters that came from China.) There are Katakana road signs and billboards. This past summer Yumi noticed that even the billboards for political candidates use Katakana for their names! (even though people usually use Kanji for their names). I guess the reason for that is perhaps with Katakana, it is easier to read (no need of knowing how to read Kanjis) and gives more impact. And Yumi's guess is that one of the candidates, "Denny Tamaki" who is half Japanese, uses Katakana for his name, others decide to compete with Denny by also using Katakana.

随分前にアップするつもりでしたが遅くなってしましました。すみません。沖縄の人もしくは沖縄に来たことがある人は気付いているでしょうが、ここ沖縄は「カタカナ天国」です！道の名前がカタカナものがあるのはもちろん、多くの看板にカタカナが使われています。この夏、気付いたのですが、この間に衆議院の総選挙の時も多くのカタカナ看板を見かけました。候補者の中には漢字で名前があるにも関わらず、あえてカタカナで書いている人もいて不思議でした。もしかしたらカタカナの方が漢字の読み方が分からない場合も読めるということとカタカナの方が見た目、インパクトがあるのでしょうか。由美の推測ですが、「デニー玉城」のようにハーフの候補者に対抗して他の候補者もカタカナにしたのではないのでしょうか。
