So here is some more on Minami-Sanriku. As some of you might remember, this city became known in the media that out of 17,000 people, 10,000 were not accounted for. Later on we found out that some who were out of contact and there was no way of knowing who was still living or dead. Here's a video from You Tube. The vantage point is a high school right behind the retirement home we worked. You can see how quickly the water moves in and how powerful it is. Also Chuck recently read an article in Washington Post about a high school student who was on the Tsudagawa High School baseball team -- the school is located next to the retirement home. He tells a story of how he helped to rescue old folks from the retirement home. The boy survived and his only real hope in life is baseball, which is so vain in the eternal perspective. Of course there is only hope in Jesus. The article gives more details of that day. Please check it out.
私たちが南三陸へ行っていた際、老人ホームの上側に位置している高校から当時の状況を撮影したビデオがあると聞き、早速探してみたところありました。ご存知の方も多いかと思いますが、この南三陸は震災直後、町の総人口数17,000人の内10,000人近くの方々が一時、行方不明と報道された町です。このビデオを見ると、津波がどれだけ早く、物凄い勢いで押し寄せてくるかが良く分かります。また、最近になって、チャックが米紙のワシントンポストという新聞にこの高校に通う高校生の記事（英語のみ）が書かれているのを見つけました。この少年はこの高校の野球部に所属し、その日は、波が押し迫る老人ホームに入居されていたお年寄りの方たちをみんなで協力して74段ある階段をおぶって、出来るだけの人たちを助けたことが書かれています。なぜ74段あったか分かったのも、毎日、野球部の練習の使っていたからとのことでした。また、ビデオをよく見ると画面の左下にお年寄りを助けている彼らが映っています。この記事では、この少年が津波で生き延びたけれど、今の自分の希望は野球に没頭して甲子園を目指すことだと書かれています。私たちクリスチャンが伝えたいことは真の希望はイエスを受け入れることから始めるということです。
